This is a personal piece; maybe more so than the rest, which is an odd sentence coming from someone who writes essays that are typically strung with my heart on my sleeve. But this one’s hard to write. It’s creating knots as I go, a barrage of whys, whens, and hows, that nearly outweigh the story outright.

By no means is my experience unique, there are versions of it everywhere. Over the years, I have run into so many different stories of all the ways that addiction changes the lives of not just the addict, but of all the people who love them.

And I am one of those people.
